CGCS2000 to WGS84: Reference Ellipsoids, Epochs, and Transformation Parameters
CGCS2000 and WGS 84 use very similar ellipsoids, but that does not make their coordinates interchangeable for precise surveying. Identify the source realisation and coordinate epoch, then select a transformation valid for the location, target frame and required accuracy. There is no single universal offset.
The relationship between CGCS2000 and WGS84
The China Geodetic Coordinate System 2000 (CGCS2000, EPSG:4490) is the national geodetic datum of China, established under the authority of the Ministry of Natural Resources. WGS84 (EPSG:4326) is the nominal reference frame used by the global GPS constellation. While surveyors often treat the two coordinate systems as interchangeable for low-precision navigation, centimeter- and millimeter-grade geodetic engineering requires accounting for rigorous mathematical differences in ellipsoid definition, reference frame realization, and tectonic plate motion.
Ellipsoidal parameter comparison
The ellipsoid dimensions are very close. The following shape parameters do not describe a complete datum transformation:
| Parameter | CGCS2000 Ellipsoid | WGS 84 Ellipsoid | Mathematical Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semi-major axis (a) | 6,378,137.0 m | 6,378,137.0 m | 0.0 m (Identical) |
| Inverse flattening (1/f) | 298.257222101 | 298.257223563 | Different defining values |
| Semi-minor axis (b) | 6,356,752.31414 m | 6,356,752.31425 m | 0.11 mm |
Why coordinates drift: Epoch and tectonic plate motion
The small ellipsoid-shape difference is not the main question in a precise transformation. Coordinates also depend on frame realisation, observation epoch, station motion and the target datum. Do not apply a country-wide fixed displacement or an assumed plate speed as a replacement for an appropriate transformation. Identify the actual source frame and coordinate epoch, then select parameters or deformation models valid for the location and required accuracy.
Mathematical transformation methods
Different operations serve different purposes. Select one only after identifying the source, target, epoch and available control:
- 3D 7-Parameter Helmert Transformation: Computes 3 translations (dX, dY, dZ), 3 rotations (Rx, Ry, Rz), and 1 scale factor (m) derived from common control points.
- Epoch propagation: Uses appropriate station velocities or deformation models to change the coordinate epoch. A plate-motion model alone does not establish a complete transformation to a national datum.
- 4-Parameter Plane Conformal Transformation: Used for local engineering projects after projecting coordinates to Gauss-Krüger or UTM plane grids.
Traceable coordinate transformation with PosFlow Axis
PosFlow Axis provides coordinate conversion and transformation workflows. Review the selected CRS, operation and any required parameters or grids. Verify the result against independent control in the project area, and retain the operation details with the deliverable instead of relying on the target CRS label alone.
자주 묻는 질문
What is the difference between CGCS2000 and WGS84?
CGCS2000 (EPSG:4490) and WGS84 (EPSG:4326) share the same semi-major axis (a = 6,378,137.0 m) and differ by only 0.11 mm in semi-minor axis due to a slight flattening difference (1/f = 298.257222101 vs 298.257223563). However, CGCS2000 is a plate-fixed datum realized at epoch 2000.0, while WGS84 realizations (e.g. G2139) track ITRF coordinates that drift ~3 cm/year in China due to tectonic plate motion.
How do I accurately transform WGS84 GNSS coordinates to CGCS2000?
Use a 3D 7-parameter Helmert transformation (3 translations, 3 rotations, 1 scale factor) derived from local survey control points, or epoch propagation using tectonic plate motion models (such as ITRF2014/ITRF2020 velocity fields).
